A Disconnected Phone Can Still Dial 911

Cell phone upgrades are a time of excitement, not unlike the holidays, where you unwrap a brand new phone from a box and spend time getting familiar with its new features. But what do you do with your old cell phones? Do toss them, save them just in case something happens to your new one, sell them, or shove them into a dresser drawer never to see them again?

Well if you don’t know what to do with your old phones then consider donating them. Victoria Rosa of WTVY in Dothan, Alabama reported that, “’Certain cell phone carriers will have their cell tower set up to where it's able to transmit a 911 call to law enforcement,‘ says Public Information Officer Maurice Eggleston.”

According to the Federal Communications Commission, wireless service providers must transmit all 911 calls whether the phone is subscribed to their services or not. (Source: WTVY)
